Wind the spool so the spring tightens, have someone hold it in place or clamp it with a C-clamp or something and feed the rope through the hole on the outside of the housing into and through the hole in the spool. Knot it off and pull it into the cut-out for the knot. Then when you release the spool, the spring will wind the new rope up.
